Libyan dinar ranks Africa’s second-strongest currency

The Libyan dinar has been ranked as Africa’s second-strongest currency at the start of August 2026, according to a ranking based on official exchange rates against the US dollar. The Tunisian dinar topped the list, while the Libyan currency ranked ahead of the Moroccan dirham.

A report by Pulse Ghana credited the dinar’s performance to Libya’s continued recovery in oil production and the adoption of the country’s first unified national budget in 13 years. Despite an official devaluation earlier this year, the currency has remained relatively strong as many African currencies continued to lose value against the US dollar.

The official exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Libya stands at approximately 6.36 dinars per US dollar, following the latest adjustment on January 18, 2026. In the parallel market, the dollar traded between 8.50 and 8.70 dinars during the past week, underscoring the ongoing gap between the official and unofficial exchange rates.
