Libya has lost approximately 390 hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2025, representing about 6% of the total tree cover recorded in 2000, according to data from the Global Nature Watch.
The Green Mountain region recorded the highest rate of tree cover loss in the country, with approximately 250 hectares, representing nearly two-thirds of the total area lost during the period.
Al-Marj came in second with a loss of about 52 hectares, followed by Derna with approximately 39 hectares, and then Al-Marqab and Zawiya with about 16 hectares each.
The Global Nature Watch report indicates that these figures represent the total loss of tree cover and do not reflect the net change in tree cover, as they do not include any gains or new areas of tree cover that may have been recorded during the same period.
