Two senators have recommended the temporary suspension of the cargo-handling contract of GLS Menzies, the company whose senior managers have been named as persons of interest in an ongoing $19 million drug investigation. The seizure, which occurred earlier this month, has quickly evolved into one of the country’s most consequential criminal investigations.
“When the leadership of a concessionaire entrusted with safeguarding our national cargo channels is itself under investigation, prudence demands that its operations be suspended until the matter is resolved,” the senators wrote. They cautioned, however, that their communication should not be construed as a declaration of guilt.
The government has elevated the case to a Joint National Security Investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, the Liberia National Police, and the National Security Agency.
