Lawmakers to Engage Foreign Ministry over Safety of Liberians in S. Africa | News

The House of Representatives has voted to constitute a joint committee drawn from the Committees on Foreign Affairs, Peace and Reconciliation, and the Refugees, Repatriation and Reintegration Commission (RRRC) to engage the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the safety and welfare of Liberians residing in South Africa amid reported xenophobic tensions.

The decision followed a communication presented to plenary by Representative Obediah Varney Jah Koakpa, who raised concern over the well-being of Liberian nationals living in South Africa in light of recurring reports of xenophobia-related incidents affecting foreign communities.

Lawmakers agreed that the newly formed joint committee should formally engage the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain an updated briefing on the government’s diplomatic engagements with South African authorities, as well as ongoing measures to safeguard Liberian citizens in affected areas.

The House emphasized the importance of timely consular reporting and strengthened diplomatic coordination to ensure rapid response to emerging security risks facing Liberian diaspora communities. Members further underscored the need for enhanced early-warning mechanisms and continuous monitoring of developments affecting Liberians abroad.

Legislators also stressed that Liberia’s foreign service must remain proactive in protecting its citizens, particularly in countries where tensions may pose risks to migrant communities.

The joint committee is expected to report back to plenary within two weeks following its engagement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing a comprehensive update on the situation and any diplomatic interventions undertaken.

The resolution reflects the House’s continued commitment to safeguarding Liberians abroad and reinforcing diplomatic channels aimed at addressing challenges affecting diaspora communities.

The House of Representatives reiterated that protecting the welfare of citizens overseas remains a national priority and requires sustained coordination between legislative oversight bodies and the executive branch, particularly in situations involving potential human rights and security concerns.
