Renowned talent developer Farouk Khan has reflected on the shifting culture of South African football, lamenting the decline of must-watch entertainers in the modern game.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, the Stars of Africa Football Academy founder revealed he recently shared these concerns in a conversation with Doctor Khumalo.

“I was just having a long conversation with Doctor Khumalo, and I was saying we need players like them, because people used to come to the stadium to watch Doctor, to watch Ace (Khuse), to watch Thabo Mooki, and those were the players people loved to watch,” Khan explained.

Reflecting on the current generation, Khan questioned whether today’s teams consistently offer the same level of individual attraction.

“Today, let’s be honest, in these big clubs, who do you go and watch? You yourself as a journalist, who do you go and watch? I don’t think there’s anybody you can tell me,” he said.

While acknowledging standout talents at certain clubs, Khan pointed to players such as Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena at Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as Relebohile Mofokeng at Orlando Pirates, as examples of players who still draw attention.

“But in some of the other clubs, you can’t mention one name you would pay to watch, even on TV,” he added.

Khan believes South African football needs to rediscover its identity of producing both effective and entertaining players.

“I think that is the culture that has to come back in South Africa, because in the past, even at clubs like AmaZulu, you could talk about great players that you had to go watch. Every team had three or four players that were entertainers, but besides being entertainers they were phenomenally good players.”
