Kaylene Corbett Claims Silver as the Swimmers Sign Off in Style
Kaylene Corbett struck silver in the women’s 200m breaststroke and the medley relay quartet signed off with African record bronze as South Africa’s swimmers closed a 22-medal campaign at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.
Four years after sharing the Birmingham podium with Tatjana Smith, Corbett went one better than her 2022 bronze. Fourth at the first turn and third at halfway, the 27-year-old surged through the closing lengths to touch in 2:24.46, 0.67 behind Scotland’s Angharad Evans, with Northern Ireland’s Ellie McCartney third. Aimee Canny produced the fastest final 50m in the field for fifth in 2:25.05, and Rebecca Meder was eighth.
The night closed with Meder anchoring Olivia Nel, Canny and Erin Gallagher to bronze in the women’s 4x100m medley relay, an African record 3:58.58 that held off Canada by 0.12, with heat swimmers Jessica Thompson, Lara van Niekerk and Georgia Nel sharing the medal. In the 50m freestyle final, Caitlin de Lange placed fifth in 24.98 and Thompson sixth in 25.06 as Australia swept the podium, while Duné Coetzee missed the 200m butterfly final as first reserve.
At The Hydro, the netballers’ unbeaten run ended in a 47-57 defeat to world number one Australia, a match decided in one quarter. South Africa lost the first 14-13, were outscored 18-8 in the decisive second, took the third 14-13 and shared the last 12-12, setting up a winner-takes-all meeting with England on Thursday night for a semi-final place, with the loser dropping to the classification matches.

Elsewhere, Prudence Sekgodiso’s 800m campaign ended with seventh in her semi-final in 2:01.57, just 2.18 seconds covering the eleven fastest across the round, Ashley Erasmus placed 10th in the shot put final with 14.83m, and Yane van der Merwe threw a season’s best 30.91m for seventh in the discus final.
Samukelisiwe Ncube’s brave quarter-final ended when the referee stopped the contest in the second round against Wales’ 2022 champion Rosie Eccles, on the greens Bridgit Herselman opened the singles with a 13-1, 8-4 win over Zambia’s Mildred Mkandawire before going down 6-3, 6-3 to Wales’ Amy Williams, and Cheyenne Smith placed 10th in the 86kg with a 186kg total.
The evening belongs to the netballers and their all-or-nothing Pool A decider against England at 22h00 SAST, with the winner into the weekend’s semi-finals.
Before that, the track hands the baton to the athletes: Marione Fourie opens her 100m hurdles campaign in the midday heats and, all going well, returns for the final on the same night, Tayla Kavanagh runs the 5000m final, Marlie Viljoen contests the 400m semi-finals and Karabo More opens in the one mile. On the greens, Herselman meets the Isle of Man’s Carol Whitehead in the singles in mid-afternoon.
