Paynesville, Liberia, June 18, 2026- Liberia’s Justice Minister and Attorney General, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, has outlined ongoing efforts aimed at prosecuting human trafficking cases in Grand Gedeh, Cape Mount, and Montserrado Counties.
The Justice Minister emphasized that the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai will leave no stone unturned in protecting victims of trafficking and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Minister Tweh made the remarks during the commemoration of World Refugee Day, organized by the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) in collaboration with the Liberia Anti-Trafficking and Scam Support Initiative. The event took place at the Paynesville City Hall on June 17, 2026.
The annual observance, celebrated on June 20, honors individuals who have fled their countries in search of safety and refuge. This year’s theme, “Solidarity with Refugees” and “Stop Irregular Migration,” underscores the urgent need for collective action and increased awareness.
Earlier, LRRRC Executive Director Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu highlighted the resilience and contributions of millions of people forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, violence, and human rights abuses.
He also reflected on Liberia’s tradition of hospitality, recalling how many Liberians once sought refuge in neighboring countries during the civil conflict, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting those in need.
This year’s focus on stopping irregular migration and human trafficking underscores the grave risks many face in their search for safety. He called for intensified public awareness and the expansion of safe and legal migration pathways to combat trafficking in all its forms.
He further explained that the LRRRC is working closely with the Government of Liberia, United Nations agencies, civil society organizations, and local communities to strengthen protection systems, improve migration governance, and promote sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
Also speaking at the event, the UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Christine N. Umutoni, encouraged refugees to remain resilient and to advocate for themselves in overcoming challenges, noting that their current situation is temporary. She emphasized the importance of pursuing solutions that promote dignity, unity, and long-term stability.
