Jinko ESS has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with UCB Power, aiming to investigate avenues for collaboration concerning the domestic manufacturing of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Brazil.
The effort aims to merge Jinko ESS’s technology, product range, and global expertise with UCB Power’s manufacturing strengths, technical proficiency, and on-the-ground presence. This partnership could allow certain solutions to fulfill local content stipulations and become eligible for projects demanding equipment produced domestically.
A pivotal juncture for Brazil’s energy industry
This deal emerges at a crucial time for Brazil’s power sector, as energy storage systems grow more vital for boosting grid adaptability and dependability, alleviating transmission and distribution bottlenecks, and facilitating higher penetration of renewable energy sources.
Emphasis on the capacity reserve auction
A key focus of the partnership will involve evaluating prospects tied to Brazil’s Capacity Reserve Auction (Leilao de Reserva de Capacidade – LRCAP). The possible integration of BESS solutions into this framework underscores the necessity of establishing a supply chain that can underpin large-scale energy storage ventures and satisfy the distinct demands of the Brazilian market.
Initial manufacturing pathway in Extrema
The first manufacturing pathway being explored would be situated at UCB Power’s plant in Extrema, Minas Gerais. The firms might also consider other production options down the line, contingent on market demand, project specifications, and prevailing market conditions. Domestic manufacturing might additionally broaden access to financing options in Brazil, such as credit facilities from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), as long as products and projects fulfill the relevant criteria and conditions.
Advancements with SunTera G3
In line with its approach to large-scale initiatives, Jinko ESS is readying SunTera G3, a containerized energy storage system with a 6.25 MWh capacity. The system incorporates 587 Ah cells, boosting energy density while keeping the container’s exterior dimensions unchanged. This offering is part of the manufacturing strategy under review for Brazil and is presently in the last phase of its certification procedure.
While LRCAP offers a notable short-term prospect, the partnership might also aid in advancing other energy storage uses linked to grid stability and flexibility, lessening transmission and distribution bottlenecks, and incorporating renewable energy sources.
