Jared Kushner Meets Hamas in Egypt to Push US-Backed Gaza Peace Plan: 25 outlets compared

Kushner meets Hamas in Egypt

The BBC said Kushner’s meeting came after Trump’s Board of Peace reached agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, and after Israel rejected Trump’s 15-point plan that also calls for Israeli troops to withdraw and for Gaza to be rebuilt under a new civilian Palestinian administration.

The Business Standard reported that Kushner held rare talks in Egypt with a Hamas delegation led by its new leader, Khalil al-Hayya, as mediators sought to advance a US-backed plan to end the conflict in Gaza.

In the same BBC account, Hamas later called on mediators and the Board of Peace to “compel” Israel to approve the roadmap for the next steps, while Netanyahu said he wants a full Hamas disarmament first to implement the deal.

Netanyahu rejects, strikes continue

Netanyahu rejected the Board of Peace’s 15-point document on Gaza, and the BBC quoted him saying, “The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed.”

The BBC also reported that the ceasefire that came into effect on 10 October last year remains in place, but that the Israel Defense Forces have carried out near daily strikes since then, including targeting Hamas and Islamic Jihad “terrorists” in Khan Younis and Nuseirat.

The Business Standard said the ceasefire has technically been in place since 10 October last year, but sporadic military strikes have continued, while the UN estimates that about 90% of Gaza’s population, or roughly 1.9 million people, has been displaced since the war began in October 2023.

In the BBC’s account of the diplomatic pressure around the plan, eight Muslim countries issued a statement on Sunday condemning Israel’s rejection of the US plan, and the BBC reported that Unicef says at least 300 children have reportedly been killed.

Disarmament, governance, and elections

The CBS News account said Kushner’s meeting in Egypt aimed at translating the Board of Peace plan into concrete, verifiable steps, including beginning to transfer governing responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza and ensuring Hamas has no future governing role in Gaza.

CBS News also said the meeting was aimed at facilitating Israeli withdrawals and deploying an international stabilizing force, while Hamas later called on mediators and the U.S.-created Board of Peace to “compel” Israel to approve the road map for next steps.

The Independent framed the stakes as the survival of approximately 2 million people in Gaza and the rebuilding of the densely populated enclave, and it said the roadmap requires Hamas to disarm and Israel to pull back its forces from the war-torn Palestinian territory.

The BBC reported that Netanyahu faces a tough October election to try to hold onto power, with a coalition that includes ministers in favour of taking a harsher line on Gaza, and it quoted far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir dismissing the draft as “not acceptable” in a podcast interview.
