Iraq’s IDC relocates drilling rig from Zubair oil field to East Baghdad field

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Drilling Company (IDC) is relocating the IDC-51 drilling rig from the Zubair oil field in the southern province of Basra to the East Baghdad South field.

Under the supervision of the state-owned Midland Oil Company (MOC), the step is part of a deal with EBS Petroleum, an Iraqi-registered subsidiary of Chinese state-owned firm ZhenHua Oil, to drill 17 horizontal wells to increase production capacity in Iraq’s central region.

The move entails disassembling the rig at Zubair, shipping components, reassembling, and conducting safety tests at East Baghdad South.

This project builds on the IDC’s past development phases in the same field, which featured distinct campaigns of 27 and 18 horizontal wells.

The East Baghdad South field is the extremely productive southern section of the larger, super-giant East Baghdad oilfield complex.

The oilfield is one of Iraq’s most unusual energy resources, measuring around 60 kilometers in length and 12 kilometers in its width. It is located just under the capital’s densely populated suburbs.

Appraisal drilling increased the proved reserves of the East Baghdad field to 15 billion barrels, including an enormous reservoir of medium and light oil.
