From Ceuta, Spain’s Foreign Minister praises Morocco’s stance on the repatriation of minors

The Spanish government has lauded Morocco’s willingness to swiftly repatriate all unaccompanied Moroccan children and teenagers who arrived in Ceuta during the mass crossings on July 30 and 31, emphasizing Rabat’s desire for the returns to occur «immediately».

During his visit to Ceuta on Tuesday morning, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares highlighted Morocco’s intent to repatriate the minors promptly, praising Rabat for its proactive stance «from the very first moment».

Spanish data indicates that at least 1,400 unaccompanied minors entered Ceuta during the recent influx, although final figures await the completion of registration and identity verification processes.

Albares pointed to the swift return of thousands to Morocco in mere hours as a testament to Rabat’s «proven willingness» and full cooperation. Following a meeting with Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, he emphasized that the repatriation of minors would be conducted in accordance with court rulings and current Spanish legislation.

Juan Jesús Vivas, from the People’s Party, appreciated Morocco’s collaboration, viewing it as essential for restoring normalcy in Ceuta, while reiterating criticism of the central government’s crisis management.

Meanwhile, Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi recently reaffirmed Rabat’s commitment to reclaim Moroccan minors, attributing delays to what he described as «judicial and administrative obstacles» on the Spanish side hindering the process.
