Iraq’s GCCE and Germany’s Sutco sign major waste-to-resource deal in Baghdad
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — The General Company for Carbon Economics (GCCE Iraq) has finalized a bilateral Master Agreement with German waste treatment plant manufacturer Sutco® to construct a modern, integrated waste management and resource recovery facility in Baghdad.
The agreement, announced by GCCE Chairman Hayder Al Darraji, was signed under the joint patronage of the governments of the Republic of Iraq and the Federal Republic of Germany, marking a decisive shift toward circular economy infrastructure and sovereign carbon market integration.
The facility is engineered to process municipal solid waste at utility scale, converting daily refuse into certified agricultural inputs, renewable aviation fuel, and internationally tradeable environmental assets:
- Daily Waste Intake: Processing capacity of approximately 6,000 tonnes of municipal waste per day.
- Organic Fertilizer Yield: Annual output of 500,000 tonnes of high-grade organic fertilizer, produced in full compliance with German industrial quality standards to support domestic agricultural self-reliance.
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Daily production of approximately 100 tonnes of SAF, providing low-carbon aviation fuel options and diversifying downstream energy products.
- Industrial Recyclable Sorting: Comprehensive material recovery lines to extract plastics, metals, and inert recyclables for domestic industrial feedstocks.
- Carbon Credit Generation:Estimated generation of up to 2 million tonnes of certified carbon offsets annually, positioning Iraq to enter international voluntary and compliance carbon credit markets under verified emissions reduction frameworks.
