Iraq: State Control of Arms Tops Government Priorities…

Iraq said Monday that the withdrawal of international coalition forces from the country is proceeding as planned, with the sites previously occupied by the coalition being handed over to Iraqi forces. Iraqi government spokesperson Haider Al-Aboudi said coordination and follow-up measures concerning the withdrawal confirm that the process is proceeding in an orderly manner. He said the scheduled date would mark the complete end of the international coalition’s presence on Iraqi territory.

Al-Aboudi said that since the government won the confidence of the Council of Representatives on May 14, 2026, it has been working according to what he described as sovereign and national priorities, with ensuring that weapons are held exclusively by the state at the forefront of those priorities as a key pillar of national sovereignty.

He said government measures on the issue represent a return to the state’s institutional framework and constitutional principles, which grant the Iraqi armed forces the authority to monopolize the use of force and prohibit the formation of armed groups outside officially authorized security institutions.

On combating corruption, Al-Aboudi said coordination among state institutions has produced what he described as unprecedented results since 2003. He said the government is implementing practical anti-corruption measures in coordination with the judiciary, the Integrity Commission, the Federal Board of Supreme Audit and the Council of Representatives.

He said this coordination among Iraq’s federal authorities has contributed to key achievements in combating corruption, describing them as progress that had not been achieved during the years since the establishment of the post-2003 Iraqi state.

The government spokesperson stressed that issues of national sovereignty, placing all weapons under state control and combating corruption are central pillars of the government’s work, as part of what he described as a return to state institutions and adherence to constitutional and legal principles.
