Iraq Oil Exports Surge: 7 Tankers Load 13 Million Barrels at Basra | Gulf Crisis Update – News and Statistics

Satellite data reviewed by Bloomberg shows seven crude tankers anchored at Iraq’s Persian Gulf loading points on August 24, a notable jump compared with recent weeks. Those vessels together could carry about 13 million barrels, the imagery indicated. TankerTrackers.com also said it observed and verified 13 million barrels being loaded that day at Iraq’s Al Basrah Oil Terminal.

That level of activity stands in contrast to the prior several weeks, when satellite passes generally caught just one or two tankers at Iraq’s offshore export sites on any given day. Before the Iran war, it was typical for six tankers to occupy the terminal’s eight berths simultaneously.

The Monday loading figures do not signal that Iraqi exports have returned to pre-war volumes. The data reflects a single day, and all of those barrels still must pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Regional crude flows have stayed far below pre-war levels even as more Gulf producers try covert shipments, ship-to-ship transfers, and alternate routes.

Iran’s crude exports have suffered the most. August loadings are estimated at roughly 300,000 barrels per day, versus a 2025 average of about 1.7 million barrels per day, while Iranian floating storage outside the Gulf has dropped to around 24 million barrels.

Iraq has done better at sustaining exports. Baghdad said earlier this month it was shipping about 2 million barrels per day despite the Hormuz disruption, and Chinese refiners have been buying Iraqi Basrah Medium and Basrah Heavy as other Gulf supplies tighten.

Seven tankers loading simultaneously does not confirm that the Gulf oil crisis is abating. But after weeks of minimal activity at Basra, it at least suggests Iraq is moving more crude toward export.
