INTRODUCING NUBIA DAHABEYA: A CONTEMPORARY CELEBRATION OF EGYPT ON THE NILE | News

Nubia Dahabeya introduces a new expression of Nile travel for the culturally curious luxury traveller. Available as an exclusive four-night private charter between Luxor and Aswan, the artist-designed sailing boat welcomes up to 12 guests for a slower, more personal journey through Upper Egypt, where culture, atmosphere and contemporary Egyptian hospitality come together. Every itinerary is owner-curated and can be tailored around the interests of each group.

Originally conceived as a private floating home and creative sanctuary, Nubia Dahabeya was designed and built from the hull up by Hedayat (Heddy) Taymour and her husband, Elwy Taymour. Working closely with a marine engineer, they created a vessel that remains true to the proportions and spirit of the traditional dahabeya while introducing a partially enclosed upper deck, conceived as an elegant indoor living and dining space. Six cabins accommodate up to 12 guests, while generous shared spaces and open decks invite long lunches, conversation and unhurried views of the Nile.

The interiors were fully renovated in 2025 by Jam by Hedayat, the multidisciplinary design practice founded by Heddy, an award-winning interior architect, product designer and sculptor with more than 25 years of international experience. Based between London and Cairo, Heddy brings together contemporary design, cultural heritage and exceptional artisan skill across hospitality, residential and cultural projects.
Throughout Nubia Dahabeya, custom-designed elements tell a story of Egypt through its makers, materials and artistic traditions. Upholstery craftsmen in Esna created seating and bolsters for the boat, while bespoke light fittings and fabrics draw inspiration from the capitals of the Edfu and Khnum temples. Hand-crafted tiles inspired by the flora of the Nile sit alongside carefully chosen antiques and contemporary pieces, creating an interior that feels collected, personal and rooted in place.

The project, completed in October 2025, with its first commercial sailing in February 2026, has been shortlisted in the International – Commercial category of the BIID Interior Design Awards 2026, with winners to be announced in London on 15 October 2026.

The Nile beyond the guidebooks
Each sailing is entirely private and owner-curated, allowing the journey to be shaped around guests’ interests and pace. Alongside visits to Esna’s ancient temple, the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Kom Ombo’s twin temple, the ancient quarries of Gebel el-Silsila and the rock-cut tombs of El Kab, itineraries can include more intimate encounters with contemporary culture, craftsmanship, food and daily life along the river.
Depending on timing and guests’ interests, these might include dinner at Tekkeya, Aswan’s farm-to-table restaurant; the Aswan International Sculpture Symposium, where monumental stone sculpture can be seen in progress; a private talk with a Nubian herbalist; or guided walks across agricultural Nile islands. Curated artisan experiences can also introduce the women weavers of Abu Habib in Luxor, whose handwoven textiles support widows in their community, as well as traditional alabaster carvers and other local craftspeople.
Life on board follows the rhythm of the Nile. Home-cooked meals are prepared from fresh local ingredients and inspired by family recipes, creating the atmosphere of dining in a private home. Evenings might end around a bonfire on a secluded island, sharing stories, songs and dancing with Nubia’s Nubian crew under the stars. The intention throughout is to help guests experience Egypt from within, with a sense of peace, connection and warmth.

A one-off total solar eclipse sailing for 2027
Nubia Dahabeya will operate a special private sailing centred on the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. The entire journey will be curated around the celestial event, with plans for a specially selected mooring offering uninterrupted views, individual eclipse-viewing kits and a celebratory champagne breakfast or brunch.
Elements include a sunset dinner inspired by the ancient Egyptians’ relationship with the sun god Ra, a private performance of traditional Nubian music around a bonfire, and visits to Heissa Island and Tekkeya. The one-off sailing will be offered at Nubia Dahabeya’s high-season private charter rate, reflecting the rarity of the event and the exceptional viewing location.
Nubia Dahabeya has appointed London-based communications consultancy Pilot PR to lead its UK public relations and strategic communications from July 2026. The campaign will introduce the private charter to luxury travel, lifestyle, interiors, culture and design media, building awareness of its distinctive approach to Nile hospitality.
