Egypt Denies Ownership of Tihama Ship Attacked by Houthis, Says Vessel is Yemeni-Owned – News and Statistics

Egyptian authorities have denied any connection to the small cargo ship Tihama, which was attacked by Houthi forces, resulting in six fatalities. The Egyptian government described reports of Egyptian ownership as inaccurate, stating that the vessel is actually owned by a Yemeni national.

According to The Maritime Executive, the ship is registered in Tanzania, but databases list Blue Sea For Management Marine as the managers and owner’s representative, with an address in Alexandria, Egypt. Egypt’s Ministry of Transport issued a statement refuting Egyptian ownership, noting that the company is not registered with the Egyptian Chamber of Shipping and lacks a license from Egypt’s Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector to operate as a maritime agency. The ministry asserted that the ship is managed from Dubai and that its owner is Yemeni. It also reported that the vessel has never entered an Egyptian port, was not bound for Egypt, and carried no cargo belonging to Egyptians.

Yemeni officials had described the ship as a civilian ferry affiliated with a private company, officially licensed for maritime transport, used to carry passengers between Aden, Djibouti, Somalia, and Socotra on round trips. They said it had previously been used to supply Socotra Island with gas and transport food and other provisions.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging that the ship was used to transport Saudi military supplies and that it was targeted as part of their campaign against Saudi military aggression. Reports indicate that the Houthis have attacked the government-controlled port of Al-Mocha for the past four days. The attack on the Tihama killed six people—four crew members and two Coast Guard members—and injured ten others.

Egypt’s Transport Minister condemned the attack and the targeting of ships in the Red Sea, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to navigation security and safety in the region. The ship’s actual role in the conflict remains unclear. A spokesperson for the Joint Forces in the Western region said they could also attack ferries used by the Houthis to move military equipment, but they were protecting civilians aboard those vessels. Observers reviewing photos of the ship noted no visible military equipment, and images showed the vessel docked, with the Yemeni government stating it was out of service for engine repairs.
