In Zimbabwe, the death toll from the ferry accident has risen to 84

The death toll from the capsizing of a passenger ferry on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to at least 84. The country’s police reported that four more bodies were found on Sunday, and search efforts are ongoing, according to Al Jazeera English.

The ferry capsized on Tuesday amid strong winds near the border with Zambia. The vessel was traveling from the city of Kariba in northern Zimbabwe to rural and fishing communities in the country’s northwest.

According to the publication, there may have been up to 153 people on board the overloaded ferry, although its capacity was 90 people. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people who were on the vessel at the time of the accident.

At least 18 of the victims were children. Local media released a video showing hundreds of people gathered outside a hospital to identify their deceased relatives.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa called the incident “tragic” and stated that it had exposed serious shortcomings that require immediate rectification. The accident is believed to be the deadliest disaster of its kind in the country.
