IG Disu visits Niger over abduction, killings of worshippers

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has received the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who visited the state over the killing and abduction of worshippers in the Dekara community and neighbouring villages in the Borgu Area of the state.

Ummikhaltume Abdullahi Kuta, the deputy governor’s spokesperson, said in a statement that Mr Disu paid a working visit to the state on Saturday and was received by Yakubu Garba, the deputy governor, who represented Mr Bago.

“The visit is part of the Inspector-General of Police’s efforts to obtain first-hand information on the security situation and operational activities of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, engage with relevant stakeholders, and strengthen strategies for enhancing peace and security,” she said.

The Peoples Gazette had previously reported that worshipers were abducted in Dekara Mosque and neighbouring villages, including the killing of at least 30 persons, and the invasion of the community on Friday.

Mr Garba reaffirmed the state’s commitment to support the police and other security agencies in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

The deputy governor stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among the state government, security agencies, traditional institutions, and communities to address security challenges and ensure citizens’ safety.

Mr Garba thanked the IG for the visit, noting that such engagements would further strengthen inter-agency cooperation and help sustain peace, stability, and development in Niger State.

In his remarks, Mr Disu said the visit was aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the operational modus operandi of the police in Niger State and evaluating ongoing efforts to rescue victims abducted by bandits in the Borgu area.

He noted that the security architecture in the state was working assiduously to address the situation and ensure the safe recovery of the abducted victims.
