Hanover Family Disputes Police Account After Relative Fatally Shot | RJR News

Relatives of a man fatally shot by the police at Barbican in Sandy Bay, Hanover last Friday are disputing the official report on the incident and demanding justice.

They say 29-year-old David Hibbert, also known as ‘Ackeem’ and ‘Unruly King’, was not killed during a confrontation as was reported by the police.

According to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), the police said the shooting occurred on August 21, when a team, armed with a warrant, carried out a targeted operation at the premises in Barbican.

But Mr. Hibbert’s stepfather, Kenroy Campbell, says there was no shootout and he did not have a weapon.

Mr. Campbell says he was at his church about 5 a.m., when police officers approached him and told him they had a search warrant for his home.

“The police man turn to me and seh ‘Where you live or where you occupy?’ Mi seh mi occupy the whole place. Him seh ‘Where you live?’ Mi seh ‘Mi live right round dere suh.’ Two of the police, a man and a woman, take me and carry mi go roun to where mi live. As mi ketch almost to where fi turn, my stepson hear di talking now and a try to open di door. As him open di door a gunshot. A cylinder in di house explode and one of the policeman drop a ground and seh ‘Shoot out! Shoot out! And him shoot about three more shot inside of the room where the guy is,” Mr. Campbell recounted.

He said the family is struggling to come to terms with Hibbert’s death and is seeking answers about what happened, as they demand justice. 

“Brother, I never know seh this would come a my doorway. I never know seh the police [whose] role a fi serve and protect people could do this to wi….kill di innocent. I need justice. Justice wi need fi this because this is so very unfair,” he bemoaned, insisting that the police’s account of the incident is a lie.
