The Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Angelo Dogbe, has highlighted the Guinea Fowl Bazaar as a strategic initiative aimed at promoting northern culture and strengthening tourism in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Farida Gebril on May 1, 2026, he explained that the event serves as a platform to showcase the rich cultural diversity of northern Ghana to a wider audience.
“This event is one of the strategies we’re leveraging on to scale that up. Culture is experienced and we have different cultures in the north. We have seen perfectly the different types of cultures that have been displayed over here; the food, the dance, the apparel and stuff,” he said.
According to him, these cultural elements can be developed into viable tourism products that can be preserved for future generations.
“We can package them as a product and it’s something we can also preserve and pass over to the generations to come,” he stated.
Angelo Dogbe further said that the initiative is helping to bridge the knowledge gap between northern and southern Ghana.
“Because of the gap between the north and the south, a lot of people don’t know much about the north. We are using this to bridge that gap and bring what’s up in the north down to the south for people to experience,” he explained.
He noted that such exposures could spark interest in domestic tourism, encouraging more people to visit the northern regions.

“People would know there’s so much going on up there and that would also stimulate their interest to travel to the north and see what’s there,” he shared.
Touching on the choice of guinea fowl as the central theme of the event, he described it as a cultural symbol in northern Ghana.
“We used guinea fowl because back in the north, it’s an identity. Every home in the north has guinea fowl and in some homes, that’s the first thing they use to welcome you. It means you’re very much welcome into their house,” he disclosed.
He also emphasised the health benefits of guinea fowl, describing it as a preferred option among medical professionals.
“When it comes to health purposes, that’s the only bird doctors will recommend to you, even if you have any other issue, because it doesn’t have fats and it tastes so good,” he said.
Angelo Dogbe stressed the need to preserve and promote such cultural assets due to their economic potential.
“This is something that we have to preserve and promote because economically, the country benefits. If we do it bigger, traffic will be directed to the north,” he stated.
He assured support from the GTA for initiatives that promote tourism and cultural development.
“As an authority, we regulate the industry. Back in my office in the north, anyone who’s trying to do something that can be supported and promoted, my office is always open to them,” he added.
