GECOL announces power grid recovery after gas supply resumes from Mellitah complex

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced on Tuesday that the national power grid has begun gradually returning to normal operating conditions following the resumption of operations at the Mellitah industrial complex and the restoration of natural gas supplies to power plants.

The company said that the resumption of gas flows is expected to improve electricity supply over the coming hours as generating units continue to return to service, according to a statement published on its Facebook page.

GECOL explained that the grid had been on the verge of gradual improvement thanks to technical and operational efforts carried out by its teams over recent weeks to address the effects of the crisis and maintain grid stability. However, developments at the Mellitah complex on Tuesday temporarily disrupted that progress.

The company said current operational indicators are encouraging and suggest the crisis is moving toward a gradual resolution as more generating units regain capacity and overall grid performance improves.

It also renewed its call to keep critical infrastructure and state facilities out of political disputes or actions that could disrupt essential public services, stressing the need to safeguard citizens’ interests and ensure the uninterrupted operation of public utilities.

Earlier, the Government of National Unity announced that the Mellitah oil and gas complex had been secured and gas supplies to power stations had resumed after forces from the Defense Ministry and the General Staff were deployed to secure the facility following its closure by protesters.

The announcement came after GECOL warned that Libya’s electricity grid faced the risk of a nationwide blackout after groups shut down fuel supply lines at the Mellitah complex, threatening to force additional power generation units offline.
