Gabon Launches First Tier III Data Center to Strengthen Digital Sovereignty

Gabon has taken a significant step in its digital transformation journey with the inauguration of its first Tier III international-standard data center, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s digital sovereignty and expanding its digital infrastructure.

The facility was officially inaugurated by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who emphasized that digital infrastructure is now as strategically important as energy and transportation networks in supporting national development.

The Tier III-certified data center has been built to international standards, offering high levels of reliability, availability, and security. The facility will enable government institutions and businesses to host sensitive data locally, reducing dependence on foreign data infrastructure while improving data protection and operational resilience.

According to government officials, the data center will serve as a cornerstone of Gabon’s long-term digital transformation strategy. It is expected to support digital public services, strengthen cybersecurity capabilities, facilitate artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and provide secure infrastructure for businesses, helping drive innovation and economic growth.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ST DIGITAL GABON to broaden access to the facility. Under the agreement, startups supported by the ministry will benefit from preferential access to professional hosting services, enabling emerging companies to leverage enterprise-grade digital infrastructure at reduced costs.

Moreover, Mark-Alexandre Doumba highlighted the growing importance of digital infrastructure as the backbone of modern public administration, cybersecurity, AI, and business competitiveness. He noted that the initiative reflects President Oligui Nguema’s vision of using digital technologies to modernize public services while creating new opportunities for innovation and youth entrepreneurship.

The launch of the Tier III data center underscores Gabon’s commitment to enhancing digital sovereignty while fostering a more inclusive innovation ecosystem. By combining world-class digital infrastructure with dedicated support for startups and entrepreneurs, the country aims to accelerate the growth of its digital economy and strengthen its position as an emerging technology hub in Central Africa.
