Fuel truck driver cited following rollover crash in Monroe

MONROE, Conn. (WFSB) – The driver of a fuel truck that rolled over in Monroe Monday morning was cited for traveling too fast for conditions, police said.

They said the crash happened on Hattertown Road near Guinea Road around 5:30 a.m.

They expected the road to be closed between Knapp Streat and Blanket Meadow Road for an extended period of time.

Police said they arrived to find the Hi-Ho fuel truck on its roof with home heat oil leaking. The truck contained 3,300 gallons of it.

They said they determined that the driver was traveling west on Hattertown Road at a high rate of speed during a heavy downpour. The driver lost control of the truck at a bend in the road near Guinea Road.

Police said the vehicle flipped over halfway up a hill, then slid back down.

The driver was not hurt.

Hazmat crews and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called to the scene. They continued an environmental cleanup four ours after the crash.

The driver was not identified by police.
