Cameroon army says five terrorists killed in southwest raid

Cameroon’s army announced on Wednesday that it had killed five terrorists during an operation in the country’s Southwest Region.

According to a statement by army spokesperson Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo, the raid was carried out on July 17 in the villages of Batanga and Asaka, located in the Akwaya subdivision near the Nigerian border, Xinhua reported.

Guemo said the operation was launched to “neutralize dangerous terrorists” who were allegedly preparing attacks in the region, including strikes on fixed communication infrastructure.

He added that security forces recovered several weapons during the operation.

The military spokesperson did not identify the group involved. However, separatist fighters seeking independence for Cameroon’s English-speaking regions have been active in the area.

Guemo also dismissed reports claiming that civilians were killed during the raid, describing them as “distorted information” spread by propaganda networks with the aim of undermining the morale of security forces.

He said security operations remain ongoing across the area to eliminate the remaining militants and ensure the safety of civilians.
