From the Egyptian Premier League to the Premier League — here’s everything happening in football over the weekend
⚽ It was a big night for Egyptian football on the European stage, starting at Camp Nou. Barcelona beat Al Ahly 2-1 in the Joan Gamper Trophy — the first African club appearance in the tournament’s history. The most poignant moment of the night came from Egypt’s own 18-year-old star Hamza Abdelkarim, who opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 29th minute but refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club. Raphinha doubled the lead from the penalty spot just before half-time, and although Zizo pulled one back for Al Ahly early in the second half, the hosts held on.
Celtic, meanwhile, put in a dominant display to beat LASK 3-0 at Celtic Park in the Champions League play-off first leg. The club’s new Egyptian signing and the first Egyptian player in the club’s history, Haissem Hassan, came on as a substitute in the second half, taking corners and contributing to Celtic’s pressure in the closing stages.
