From Benin To Toronto: How Aghedo Eghosa Destiny Is Taking Nigerian Cricket Beyond Borders. – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

For years, Nigerian cricketers have watched opportunities abroad from a distance. Aghedo Eghosa Destiny has decided to close that distance with performance.

The Nigerian all-rounder has signed for Canadian Nationals Xtreme 11 Cricket Club, earning a place in the Toronto & District Cricket Association (TDCA) Elite Division and Premier League, where he will test himself in one of Canada’s most competitive domestic cricket structures.

It is another significant step for a player whose career has quietly gathered momentum, first in Nigeria, then in England, and now in North America.

Canadian Nationals Xtreme 11 announced Eghosa as its latest overseas signing, describing him as a player whose talent, commitment and match-winning ability would strengthen the club both on and off the field.

*The confidence did not take long to justify.*

In one of his first outings for the club against Tamil Eelam CTS Cricket Club, Eghosa produced the sort of spell that quickly earns the respect of teammates and opponents alike. His figures of 3 wickets for 8 runs, including three maiden overs, helped seal victory and offered Canadian cricket an early glimpse of what the Nigerian brings to the game.

The move comes at a time when Eghosa is enjoying arguably the finest form of his career.

Only weeks earlier, he was instrumental in leading Middle-Belt Tigers Cricket Club to the 2026 Nigeria Super League title. He finished the competition with three Player of the Match awards, the highest by any player in the tournament, before delivering another decisive all-round performance in the final to claim Player of the Match as his side lifted the championship.

*Now, another milestone awaits.*

Eghosa is set to become the first Nigerian cricketer to feature in the Canada K T20, Canada’s premier Punjabi cricket festival, which runs from July 30 to August 3 at the Maple Leaf Cricket Grounds in King City, Ontario. The tournament attracts 40 teams from across the country and has become one of the biggest celebrations of T20 cricket in Canada.

For Nigerian cricket, his participation carries weight beyond individual achievement. It reflects the gradual emergence of Nigerian players in overseas leagues, where opportunities have traditionally been limited.

*Eghosa’s journey has never followed a straight path.*

After representing Nigeria at Under-19 level, he progressed into the national senior team setup before taking his first steps abroad with Minster Cricket Club in England during the 2018-19 Kent Cricket League season. There, he adapted quickly to unfamiliar conditions, scoring 599 runs and claiming 43 wickets in approximately 45 matches. His best bowling figures of 5 for 20 underlined his value as a genuine all-rounder.

A planned move to New Zealand in 2020 was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing an unexpected pause in his overseas ambitions. Rather than stall his development, the setback became a period of growth. Back in Nigeria, he continued to sharpen his game, collecting domestic honours and establishing himself as one of the country’s most dependable performers.

His résumé now includes a Nigeria Super League title, a gold medal at the 2025 National Sports Festival and several individual awards across domestic competitions. Yet those who have followed his career know that statistics tell only part of the story.

The bigger measure of his progress is that clubs in different cricketing cultures continue to place their trust in him.

*Canada is simply the latest destination.*

If his early performances are anything to go by, it is unlikely to be the last.

For a country still carving out its place in world cricket, every overseas success expands the possibilities for those who dream of following the same path. Aghedo Eghosa Destiny is proving that Nigerian cricket’s future may well be written far beyond its borders.
