France kick off the last eight action of the World Cup as the deserved favorite to lift the trophy on the 19th, but know they face their toughest challenge to date in a repeat of the 2022 semi-final. Unlike Paraguay in the round of 16, don’t expect Morocco to sit back and soak up French pressure for 90 minutes. For that reason, my best bet is for both teams to score.
Didier Deschamps’ men have flexed their attacking muscle throughout the tournament, scoring 14 goals in the process of winning all five matches, creating so many chances from both open play and quick transitions. Only Lionel Messi has scored more than Kylian Mbappé’s seven goals while the magical Michael Olise has provided a tournament-high five assists.
Morocco will take to the field with far more confidence than the market suggests a +600 dog should, having scored 10 times themselves and coming off an emphatic 3-0 defeat of co-hosts Canada. Under coach Mohamed Ouahbi, they are noticeably more adventurous going forward than in Qatar four years ago.
Les Bleus will be their usual front-foot selves, but that will create space and opportunity for their opponents on the counterattack. Assistant coach Guy Stephan has already acknowledged the Atlas Lions’ “elite individual talent” who are “excellent in attacking transitions and have scored a significant number of goals during this tournament.”
France has the individual quality to progress, but a win to nil is far less likely than the odds imply in my opinion. With their pace and technical ability, Morocco can exploit any openings they receive, especially in wide areas. If the favorites take the lead, this game should really open up.
The most likely outcome is still a French victory, but one that requires them to outscore a dangerous opponent rather than shut them out.
