Former Kakamega Homeboyz defender becomes latest Kenyan to crossover to Tanzania

Confirming the transfer, the Bukoba-based outfit welcomed Onyango, highlighting his experience at both club and international level.

“It is now official! Boniface Opiyo has joined our team, Kagera Sugar FC. A warm welcome to the club. We are delighted to have you on board. The Kenyan defender joins Kagera Sugar FC from Kakamega Homeboyz FC. He is a central defender and has previously represented the Kenya national team,” the club announced.

Onyango leaves Homeboyz with six months still remaining on his contract, after an impressive stint in Kakamega that saw him re-establish himself as one of the league’s most dependable defenders.

Capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back, central defender or left wing-back, Onyango was instrumental in Homeboyz’s impressive third-place finish during the 2025/26 campaign, producing a string of commanding performances that underpinned the club’s push for a podium finish.

Before joining Homeboyz, the experienced defender enjoyed successful spells at Kariobangi Sharks and Tusker FC, where he built a reputation as a composed and reliable defender.

At Tusker, he featured in a title-chasing side, and gained valuable continental experience, while his consistent displays at Kariobangi Sharks earned him national recognition and eventually a call-up to the Harambee Stars.

His move to Tanzania marks another milestone in a career that has steadily grown through consistent performances in FKF-PL.

Onyango also becomes the latest Kenyan player to secure a move to the Tanzanian league, joining a growing list of compatriots plying their trade across the border.

The league is already home to several Kenyan stars, including: Duke Abuya at Young Africans (Yanga), the Pamba Jiji trio of Brian Eshianda, Shaphan Oyugi and Stephen Ochieng, as well as Mathew Tegisi, who recently joined Singida Black Stars.

His arrival comes just days after Kagera Sugar unveiled reigning National Super League (NSL) Golden Boot winner and Most Valuable Player Collins Mwangi from Fortune Sacco, who scored 25 league goals last season.

Founded in 1973, Kagera Sugar are among Tanzania’s traditional clubs and are returning to the Premier League determined to cement their place after earning promotion.

The acquisition of a defender of Onyango’s calibre signals the club’s ambition to compete, rather than merely survive in their first season back in the top flight.
