Five Colombian Riders Line Up for the 2026 Vuelta a España
Five Colombian riders line up for the 2026 Vuelta a España, kicking off Saturday, Aug. 22, with a 9.4-kilometer (5.8-mile) time trial in Monaco. Santiago Buitrago, Harold Tejada, Ivan Sosa, Juan Guillermo Martinez, and Juan Felipe Rodriguez will suit up for five different teams in the 184-rider peloton. The 23-day race finishes Sept. 13 in Granada after crossing Monaco, France, Andorra, and Spain.
The lineup pairs established contenders with younger riders taking their next steps. Buitrago and Tejada boast the strongest general-classification credentials, while Sosa makes his first Vuelta return in six years. Martinez returns for his second start, and Rodriguez makes his Grand Tour debut.
Santiago Buitrago leads Colombia’s challenge
Santiago Buitrago, 26, races for Bahrain Victorious with number 72. Born in Bogota on Sept. 25, 1999, he has already competed in the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
Buitrago placed 10th overall at the 2023 Vuelta a España and 15th in 2025. His Grand Tour resume also features 12th- and 13th-place finishes at the Giro d’Italia (2022, 2023), alongside a standout 10th-place result in his 2024 Tour de France debut.
His palmarès includes Giro d’Italia stage wins in 2022 and 2023, a Paris-Nice stage victory in 2024, and a stage win at the Vuelta a Burgos. In 2025, he claimed the overall title at the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana. That track record gives him the strongest general-classification credentials among the five Colombians.
Harold Tejada returns with a general-classification goal
Harold Tejada, 29, represents XDS Astana Team with number 181. He was born in Pitalito, Huila, on Apr. 27, 1997.
Tejada has raced all three Grand Tours and finished 12th overall in the 2025 Vuelta, his best result in the race. He has also competed in the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, giving him extensive experience in three-week stage races.
His 2026 season includes fourth overall at the UAE Tour and a stage victory at Paris-Nice. He enters the Vuelta with the general classification as his stated objective.
Tejada’s team also includes Italian climber Lorenzo Fortunato, who finished third overall at the 2025 Giro d’Italia. The Astana rider therefore begins the race with both a personal GC target and an experienced mountain-racing environment around him.
Ivan Sosa returns to the Vuelta after six years
Ivan Sosa, 28, races for Equipo Kern Pharma with number 226. Born in Pasca, Cundinamarca, on Oct. 31, 1997, he returns to the Vuelta for his second appearance.
Sosa made his debut in 2020 and finished 62nd overall. The 2026 edition marks his first return to the Spanish Grand Tour since then.
The Colombian climber built much of his career around stage races. He won the Vuelta a Burgos in 2018 and 2019, the Tour de La Provence in 2021, the Vuelta a Asturias and Tour de Langkawi in 2022, among other victories.
His inclusion provides Equipo Kern Pharma with a seasoned mountain specialist, even though his previous Vuelta appearance dates back six years.
Juan Guillermo Martinez returns for his second Vuelta
Juan Guillermo Martinez, 21, races for Team Picnic PostNL with number 215. Born in Umbita, Boyaca, on Nov. 21, 2004, he is the youngest Colombian in the race.
Martinez made his Vuelta debut in 2025 and finished 54th overall. That remains his only previous Grand Tour appearance.
The Colombian developed through European under-23 racing before joining Team Picnic PostNL. He spent two seasons with the Q36.5 Continental Cycling Team and moved to Picnic PostNL in 2025. His profile is that of a climber, with his background in Boyaca contributing to his experience on mountainous terrain.
The 2026 Vuelta therefore gives Martinez his second opportunity to complete a three-week Grand Tour and measure himself against a stronger field.
Juan Felipe Rodriguez makes his Grand Tour debut
Juan Felipe Rodriguez, 22, suits up for EF Education–EasyPost wearing number 166. Born in Tenjo, Cundinamarca, on Nov. 5, 2003, the young Colombian climber lines up for his very first Grand Tour.
Rodriguez joined EF Education-Aevolo’s under-23 program in 2026 before receiving a permanent promotion to the WorldTour team in August. EF selected him for the Vuelta as part of a lineup led by Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, the 2019 Giro d’Italia winner and 2024 Vuelta champion.
His development is highlighted by a stage win and a third-place overall finish at the 2025 Ronde de l’Isard. That same year, he claimed the general classification title at the Vuelta de la Juventud, Colombia’s premier under-23 stage race.
Pogačar leads the favorites
The Colombian contingent enters a Vuelta dominated by headlines surrounding race favorite Tadej Pogačar. The Slovenian returns to the race for the first time since finishing third in 2019. He arrives after winning the 2026 Tour de France and already owns the 2024 Giro d’Italia title. A Vuelta victory would give him all three Grand Tour titles.
Primoz Roglic, a four-time Vuelta winner, is among the principal challengers, although a recent crash has raised questions about his condition. Other contenders include Richard Carapaz, Felix Gall, Oscar Onley, Mattias Skjelmose and Enric Mas. Gall comes off an overall win at the 2026 Vuelta a Burgos, while Carapaz joins the field after a two-stage sweep at the Tour de France.
Jonas Vingegaard, the defending champion, does not start after ending his season following his Tour de France crash. That leaves Pogačar as the clear pre-race favorite as he seeks the only Grand Tour title missing from his career.
For Colombia, Buitrago and Tejada carry the clearest general-classification ambitions. Sosa brings a previous Vuelta appearance and a long record in stage races, while Martinez returns for a second Grand Tour and Rodriguez begins his first experience. The opening time trial establishes the first standings before the race reaches its early mountain tests in France and Andorra.
