First Niger Bridge Shut for Two Weeks Over Emergency Repairs

The Federal Ministry of Works has fully closed the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, to traffic for emergency maintenance and rehabilitation.

The closure commenced on Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to last until September 21, according to the ministry.

The intervention, the ministry said, became necessary following the deteriorated condition of the bridge’s carriageway and damage to some of its components caused by vandalism.

Among the vandalised components are parts of the expansion-joint steelwork, stanchion, and steel-truss nuts and bolts.

The rehabilitation works will involve the removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface and the laying of a new approximately 40mm asphalt wearing course, alongside other maintenance and safety interventions.

As part of efforts to enhance security on the bridge and deter further vandalism, the Federal Government will also install solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

Motorists have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the period of the closure.

The ministry said traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers and traffic-control personnel would be deployed to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians and construction workers.

It added that the repair works would be carried out day and night to accelerate completion and reopen the bridge to traffic as scheduled.
