FG unveils 12 projects at University of Benin

The Federal Government has commissioned a number of landmark projects at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), commending the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, for her commitment to improving healthcare delivery and upgrading critical infrastructure at the institution.

The projects were unveiled during a facility tour led by Prof. Ize-Iyamu on Tuesday, with management, government officials and other health-sector stakeholders inspecting more than 12 projects initiated under her administration.

Speaking during the exercise, the UBTH Chief Medical Director said the projects were designed to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services.

According to her, although UBTH has operated for more than five decades, several of its facilities had deteriorated over the years, making comprehensive infrastructural renewal necessary to meet contemporary healthcare demands.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, mni, was represented at the event by the Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, Dr Philip Ugbodaga, who unveiled the Special Investigation Unit, among other facilities.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare commended Prof. Ize-Iyamu for what it described as visionary leadership and sustained efforts towards improving the standard of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Among the commissioned projects are a modern police post, expanded Accident and Emergency waiting area, upgraded mortuary complex, Multi-Faith Centre and Renal Premium Ward.

Others include a new gas plant, geriatric library and lounge, a 160-slice CT scan facility in the Radiology Department and a dedicated Special Investigation Unit.

The projects also include a modern dentistry complex, oncology centre and a pantry adjoining the hospital’s main operating theatre.

The new facilities are expected to enhance UBTH’s diagnostic, emergency, specialist and support services while strengthening the hospital’s capacity to respond to the healthcare needs of patients within Edo State and beyond.
