FG Denies Backing Coup Attempt In Niger Republic

The Federal Government has dismissed claims that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) backed the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.

This was just as it described the allegations as false, mischievous and intended to damage Nigeria’s reputation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement signed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, on Thursday, said the claims circulating on social media were baseless and should be disregarded.

The ministry stressed that Nigeria had never supported, and would not support, any unconstitutional seizure of power, regardless of the country or individuals involved.

According to the statement, Nigeria remains committed to constitutional democracy, the rule of law and peaceful resolution of political disputes across West Africa and the wider African continent.

The ministry recalled Nigeria’s position contained in its Press Statement No. MFA/PR/2026/220, issued on August 30, 2026, in which the government expressed concern over developments in Niger and called for a peaceful, inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order.

“Any resort to force to settle political differences is contrary to this objective and to Nigeria’s long-standing foreign policy,” the ministry stated.

The government further rejected suggestions that its membership of ECOWAS amounted to an endorsement of the military takeover in Niger.

While reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS, the ministry said it was “unfair, mischievous and entirely false” to claim that the country condoned or supported the coup.

It said Nigeria’s relationship with Niger was rooted in shared borders, history, culture and fraternal ties, adding that Abuja’s interest remained the restoration of peace, security, democracy and development in the neighbouring country.

The ministry also urged Nigerians at home and abroad to ignore videos and narratives being circulated online which, it said, were designed to create division and sow discord.

“Nigeria remains firmly committed to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and to the African Union’s zero tolerance for unconstitutional change of government,” the statement added.

The Federal Government said it would continue to work with ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community to protect democratic governance, uphold the rule of law and promote peace and stability across the region.
