Feds seize $33M in fake FIFA World Cup goods at borders

WASHINGTON (KBTX) – Federal border officials have wrapped up a massive trade enforcement operation targeting counterfeit merchandise during the FIFA World Cup 2026™, seizing more than $33 million worth of fake merchandise.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) announced the conclusion of the enforcement campaign Friday. Officials said officers prioritized protecting consumers and U.S. commerce from illicit goods at all ports of entry.

As of July 20, 2026, border officers conducted 2,246 seizures, intercepting 476,903 counterfeit items. The total estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the seized goods reached $33,112,031.

“OFO’s enforcement actions during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ sent a clear message: counterfeit and illicit goods will not be tolerated at America’s borders,” Diane J. Sabatino, OFO Executive Assistant Commissioner, said in a statement. “CBP is protecting economic security, preventing proceeds from reaching the hands of criminal organizations, and stopping illegal transnational criminal organizations that profit from forced labor.”

Massive Shipments of Fake Jerseys, Toys Intercepted

During the tournament, CBP officers targeted high-risk cargo containers, express consignments, and commercial imports. Some of the largest busts included:

• Mexico Soccer Jerseys: Over 18,000 counterfeit jerseys without proper licensing, valued at more than $2.7 million MSRP.
• FIFA Mascot Toys: Nearly 68,000 non-genuine mascot toys confirmed fake by trademark holders, valued at over $2.3 million.
• Adidas Soccer Jerseys: More than 13,000 counterfeit jerseys valued at over $1.8 million.

All seized items were processed under federal law.

Tech Tools Aided CBP Enforcement

Officials said advanced targeting, intelligence sharing, and close coordination with trademark owners helped drive the operation.

CBP also utilized “COMPASS,” an interactive virtual assistant launched on April 1, 2026. The secure tool answered trade and cargo entry questions for importers and brokers, allowing border officers to remain focused on frontline enforcement. Since its launch, COMPASS has handled more than 85,000 inquiries.
