Ex-Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag believes his former side is not safe from relegation after slipping to 17th in the Premier League standings.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the season with just two wins in 13 games in all competitions, losing seven times and drawing a further four games.

Relegation Not Ruled Out

Their latest result saw a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and left them without a win in nine games, and Ten Hag, who also drew criticism during his time at the club, has admitted that relegation has become a real possibility this season, according to The Sun.

“In the Premier League it’s [relegation] certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong. They’re all strong squads, all good managers,” the Dutchman explained.

“And if you end up on the wrong side once and you really get into that vicious circle — yes, then it can become very, very difficult,” he added.

The 20-time league champions have reportedly given Carrick time until the international break to turn results around.

The last time the club failed to win any of their first seven away games in a season was the 1973/74 season – they were relegated that season.

Ten Hag Reflects Positively On Man Utd Tenure

Ten Hag also discussed his time at Old Trafford and said he holds fond memories, winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his two full seasons.

“I think we performed pretty well with United. I think we performed more than pretty well. We couldn’t have done it better,” he said.

“Before we arrived, six years without winning a trophy. Look where they are now. We were at Wembley six times; we played two FA Cup finals. We won two trophies, we finished third,” the 56-year-old continued.

“And yes, we simply performed pretty well. And at times we also played pretty good football. We also had a difficult spell… But the Premier League is so strong and when you hit a difficult spell, yes, then you really have a problem,” he concluded.

Carrick’s next task is a UEFA Champions League clash against Italian giants AS Roma before hosting Aston Villa in their final Premier League game before the international break.
