EU’s strongest military, Iraq, Turkey and a Gulf nation back Africa’s strongest military in a challenge to Israel over an oil-rich peninsula
This diplomatic firestorm was recently ignited when Colombia officially recognized the Golan Heights as part of Israel, a move that many world leaders say ignores decades of international agreements and United Nations resolutions.
A global outcry against occupation
A large group of nations has quickly moved to reject any attempt to change the status of the Golan Heights, which they view as occupied Syrian land.
Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have led the charge in the Middle East, arguing that such recognition sets a dangerous precedent.
According to the Jordan News Agency, “Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned on Tuesday the decision by Colombia to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights“.
Iraqi officials emphasized that no outside country has the power to grant legitimacy to an occupation.
European union most militarized nation, France has also remained steadfast in its refusal to accept the annexation.
According to Voice of Emirates, “The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Paris’s refusal to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Syrian Golan Heights, emphasizing that its stance regarding the territory’s legal status remains unchanged“.
These nations argue that the land was seized by force during the 1967 war and must be returned to Syria under international law.
One of the world’s most powerful nations, Turkey, also condemned Israeli sovereignty over the territory.
According to the Middle East Eye, “We reiterate our call for the international community to do its part to end Israel’s occupation of southern Syria, including the Golan Heights, and its attacks targeting the country’s sovereignty and stability“
Netanyahu and allies defend the decision
Despite the pressure from the UN and neighboring countries, Israel maintains that the Golan Heights is essential for its national survival. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been vocal about his intention to keep the territory forever, citing security concerns and the area’s strategic location.
“The Golan Heights is ‘Israeli land,’ and Israel remains committed to controlling it as a vital area for its security.”
This position is supported by the United States, which officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the region in 2019 under the Trump administration.
Colombia’s recent decision to follow suit has provided Israel with a new ally in South America, though it has cost Colombia significant diplomatic standing with the Arab world.
Supporters of the move argue that the reality on the ground has changed over the last 50 years and that Israel’s presence provides stability in a volatile region.
The role of international law
The core of this disagreement lies in how different countries interpret international law, specifically UN Security Council Resolution 497.
This resolution, passed in 1981, declared Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights “null and void“.
Many countries believe that ignoring this resolution undermines the entire framework of global peace.
According to Arab News Japan, “The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the recognition explicitly contravenes UN Security Council Resolution 497, adopted in 1981, which deemed Israel’s imposition of its laws… on the occupied Golan Heights ‘null and void and without international legal effect”
As the debate continues, the Golan Heights remains one of the most contested pieces of land in the world.
While Israel and its few allies look toward a future where their control is permanent, the majority of the international community continues to demand a return to the borders established before the 1967 conflict.
