EU Envoy: Yemen Must Not Become Arena for Regional Conflict

Aden — The European Union’s ambassador to Yemen, Patrick Simonnet, warned Monday that Yemen should not be allowed to turn into a battleground for regional rivalries, urging international and regional actors to support de‑escalation and push for a political solution that prevents further internal division and the erosion of state institutions.

In an interview with South24 Center for News and Studies, Simonnet described the southern issue as “a politically important and complex matter” that must be addressed seriously.

He stressed the need for southern voices and perspectives to be given “genuine and meaningful representation” in any inclusive political process.

He added that any sustainable settlement in Yemen must reflect the diversity of the south, noting that Yemenis themselves should determine mechanisms for addressing the southern question.

Simonnet welcomed the call by Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al‑Alimi to convene a southern dialogue conference, and Saudi Arabia’s offer to host it.

The ambassador also discussed developments in southern Yemen since December 2025, the future of the political process, regional competition, and Red Sea security.

He highlighted recent attacks on shipping and referenced the role of EU maritime missions “Aspides” and “Atalanta,” as well as the bloc’s position on the Saudi‑led multinational naval coalition.

Simonnet further addressed European assistance to Yemen, including efforts to support economic recovery, human rights, and media freedom, underscoring the EU’s commitment to maintaining a presence and partnership in the country.
