Egypt’s PM joins Tanzanian President in inaugurating Julius Nyerere Dam
CAIRO – 22 August 2026: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, attended Saturday, August 22, 2026, the opening ceremony of Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere Dam and hydropower plant, built by the Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan attended the ceremony, which marked a major milestone in Egypt-Tanzania development cooperation.
The project, located on the Rufiji River in southern Tanzania, is the country’s largest hydropower project and one of the biggest infrastructure projects carried out by Egyptian companies in Africa.
The dam is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s energy sector and support economic development, underscoring the strategic partnership between Egypt and Tanzania and Cairo’s growing role in supporting development projects across Africa.
At the beginning of the official inauguration ceremony for the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Station project in the United Republic of Tanzania, implemented by the Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, representing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, participated in an extensive inspection tour of the project site, accompanied by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan of the United Republic of Tanzania, and in the presence of high-level delegations from both countries.
Dr. Hani Sweilem, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Eng. Randa El-Menshawy, Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, participated in the official inauguration ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Plant project on the Rufiji River in the United Republic of Tanzania.
Minister Sweilem noted that the implementation of this mega-project by an Egyptian consortium comprising the Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric reflects the strength and solidity of the Egyptian-Tanzanian partnership and the confidence in Egyptian expertise and capabilities to execute large and complex projects.
For her part, Minister of Housing Eng. Randa El-Menshawy, emphasized that this project represents a shining example of partnership and cooperation between Egypt and its brothers on the African continent, and embodies the attention given by the Egyptian state, under the leadership of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to strengthening Egyptian-African relations and supporting development efforts in the countries of the continent towards a more sustainable future.
The joint field visit included an inspection of the project’s key stations and vital facilities to assess their completion and operational readiness.
The two officials began by inspecting the hydroelectric power station building (Power House), which houses nine giant water turbines, each with a capacity of 235 megawatts, for a total generating capacity of 2,115 megawatts.
They also inspected the 400-kilovolt switchyard, responsible for transmitting the power generated from the production units and integrating it into the Tanzanian national electricity grid via the Shalenzi 1 and Shalenzi 2 interconnection circuits.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, also inspected the Main Dam, one of the largest dams in Africa. This concrete dam stretches 1,036 meters in length and 131 meters in height.
He also visited the Dam Crest Bridge, which spans the Rufiji River and creates a massive reservoir with a capacity of approximately 34 billion cubic meters. The dam is equipped with seven water outlets for controlling and releasing water flow.
Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly also inspected the main components of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Station in Tanzania.
Following the inspection tour, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly joined Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in unveiling the commemorative plaque, officially inaugurating the project and marking the start of its operational service to the brotherly Tanzanian people and supporting the country’s development.
A group photo was taken, bringing together the Prime Minister, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the high-level delegations, and representatives of the Egyptian consortium implementing the project, to document this historic occasion.
The tour and the official inauguration ceremony were also attended by the high-level delegation accompanying the Prime Minister, including: Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation; Eng. Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; Eng. Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria (formerly Deputy Director of the consortium); Ambassador Sherif Ismail, Egypt’s Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania; Eng. Ahmed El-Assar, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Arab Contractors Company; Eng. Ahmed El-Sewedy, CEO and Managing Director of Elsewedy Electric; and officials and representatives of the Egyptian consortium implementing the project.
Also participating in the events was a high-level Tanzanian delegation that included: Dr. Emmanuel John Nshimbi, Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Mwijolo Nshimba, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, the Minister of Energy, and the Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals.
