Egypt backs Somali sovereignty, territorial integrity

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation, and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdel-Aati, has reaffirmed Cairo’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, rejecting any unilateral measures that undermine the Somali state.

Abdel-Aati made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the sidelines of the Second Extraordinary Summit of Troop-Contributing Countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Kampala.

The minister conveyed greetings from President Abdel Fattah ElSisi, expressing Egypt’s pride in the growing momentum of bilateral relations and its commitment to strengthening cooperation across various sectors.

Abdel-Aati also reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of the move by Somalia’s north-western region, the self-declared “Somaliland,” to open a diplomatic representation in Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem). He described the act as illegal, unacceptable, and a flagrant violation of international law and relevant UN resolutions.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of continued coordination with international partners to secure sustainable funding for AUSSOM. He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s national institutions, bolstering counter-terrorism efforts, and enhancing security and stability across the Horn of Africa.
