Ebola victim’s family member tests positive for virus

Kenya has confirmed a second case of Ebola, with a 39-year-old man testing positive for Bundibugyo ebolavirus while in quarantine, bringing the total to two infections and one death.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Health said the man, a close family member of the first patient, developed a fever, fatigue and joint pains on October 13. He tested positive at both the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri)-CDC laboratory after being isolated.

“Because he was already in quarantine, his illness was detected early. He is now in a designated treatment centre, where trained staff are providing supportive care,” said Dr Patrick Amoth, Director General of Health.

The ministry said the two cases were linked, with no evidence of wider community transmission. By October 13, authorities had listed 128 contacts of the first patient and traced 113.

Of these, 108 were in quarantine in Kenya, while authorities in the countries where the other five were located had been notified. Contact tracing for the remaining 15 is ongoing.

Kenya confirmed its first imported case on October 6, after a Kenyan man who had lived in the Democratic Re-public of Congo (DRC) for seven years died at The Nairobi Hospital on October 5.

The case raised questions about screening at entry points and renewed scrutiny of Kenya’s Ebola preparedness, including a proposed quarantine facility in Laikipia backed by the United States.

The US government had committed $13.5 million (Sh1.7 billion) towards preparedness, but construction of the facility was suspended following a court dispute.

China has since provided Kenya with Sh129 million to strengthen Ebola preparedness, while the United States has also provided $14.52 million (Sh1.9 billion).

The Ministry of Health has reinforced infection prevention measures at quarantine and treatment facilities. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died from the disease.
