Ebola began in May with suspected cases in eastern Congo. What followed was a race against time, as health workers fought to contain the disease. Insecurity, community resistance, and a shortage of funding slowed the response.
By August, thousands of people had been exposed, hundreds had died, and the virus was threatening to spread beyond the region.
