Dubai Customs Foils Attempt to Smuggle 223 Endangered Live Creatures

Dubai — Dubai Customs has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 223 live endangered species through Dubai International Airport, in a case that underscores the readiness of inspection teams to counter cross-border crimes and protect biodiversity.

According to the UAE News Agency, the seizure followed the detection of an unclaimed suitcase that raised suspicion among inspectors. A thorough search revealed 129 lizards, 36 scorpions, 8 snakes, and 50 frogs, totaling 223 live creatures of various species and sizes, some believed to fall under the CITES Convention on endangered wildlife trade.

The confiscated animals were handed over to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment for appropriate legal and environmental procedures.

Khalid Ahmed, Director of Passenger Operations at Dubai Customs, said the success reflects the professionalism of field teams and their ability to respond to evolving smuggling methods.

He emphasized that customs protection now extends beyond preventing prohibited goods to safeguarding ecosystems and natural resources.

He added that the operation highlights Dubai’s role as a global model in border security and environmental protection, with ongoing investments in human expertise and modern technologies to support the UAE’s international commitments to biodiversity.
