The Moment Yemen’s ‘Spider-Man’ Fell Into a Volcano Is Devastating to Watch

A free-climbing Yemeni who rose to social media fame for scaling vertical rock faces without ropes or safety gear has died in a fall into a volcano crater, officials said Saturday.

Al-Qa’qa’ bin Antar, 30, also widely known as Qaqaa Antar al-Absi, fell on Friday while attempting to climb the 120-meter (394-foot) Haradhat Damt volcano crater in Yemen’s southern province of Al Dhale, Al Jazeera reported. He scaled the sheer face without ropes, harnesses or other safety equipment.

Bin Antar had become popular across social media platforms, earning the nickname the “Spider-Man of Yemen” for his videos of him climbing steep cliffs and volcanic formations, at times leaving white chalk-written names high on rock faces.

Civil Defense forces recovered his body Saturday following a nearly 24-hour recovery operation, according to Yemen Monitor.

Yemen Online stated that rescue workers used diving and water rescue teams and equipment and lighting units to access the difficult location.

Steep, rocky terrain, a difficult-to-access climbing location, and the hazards within the crater complicated rescue efforts, according to local reports.

Videos have been posted online that appear to capture bin Antar’s fatal fall into the crater, showing the moment he loses his grip.

Yemen Online had previously reported that bin Antar had described poverty as a motivator for the perilous climbs in an effort to earn money.
