One of South Africa’s longest-serving goalkeeper coaches, Alex Heredia, has weighed in on Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen’s costly errors of late, urging the club to act before it costs them any further.

Petersen was back in the spotlight this week when he let in a soft goal in the 2-2 draw against Richards Bay at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal. The goalkeeper took his time to clear the ball, and home side striker Nqaba Xulu took full advantage.

Earlier this month, Petersen was caught off his line, allowing Golden Arrows to score and win 1-0 at the FNB Stadium — a result that knocked Chiefs out of the MTN8.

“He Can Be Man of the Match or Make the Team Lose”

Heredia has seen enough and says it is high time Chiefs mentor Fernando Da Cruz drop Petersen in favour of Bruce Bvuma, with Renaldo Leaner also an option.

“I would drop Petersen and play Bvuma, and the reason is the inconsistency of Petersen over the years. Yes, he has fantastic games, but he also makes horrible mistakes,” Heredia told Soccer Laduma.

“He’s not consistent; this is the biggest problem. And now when you play him, you never know how he’s going to react. He can be the Man of the Match or he can make the team lose because of silly mistakes. In my opinion, if there is an alternative goalkeeper, they have Bvuma,” stated Heredia.

“Unfortunately, a big team like Kaizer Chiefs cannot afford to lose games for silly mistakes. Individual mistakes, especially from a goalkeeper, cannot be tolerated. If they want to compete for the league, they must have a consistent goalkeeper, first of all,” he added.

A Season to Remember — Until Recently

In Petersen’s defence, he was outstanding last season, more often than not. Chiefs ended the 2025/26 season with the second-best defence in the league, conceding 19 goals in 30 games, behind only the champions Orlando Pirates, who let in just 12.

Petersen was nominated for the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season accolade but missed out to Sipho Chaine of Pirates.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi will return to action when they host Siwelele at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, 6 September — a fixture that could see Da Cruz face a big decision on who takes the gloves.# Heredia: “Drop Petersen and Play Bvuma”
