BRASILIA (Brazil) – Jean Montero scored 30 points, Andrés Feliz added 24 and the Dominican Republic played stifling defense to hand Brazil their first loss of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers, winning 94-90 after the hosts had gone unbeaten through seven games.

Montero, who will play for Greek powerhouse Olympiacos this season, set a new personal scoring high for the Dominican Republic with 30 points, knocking down 5-of-9 attempts from three-point range while also contributing 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Feliz, who plays for Real Madrid in Spain, came close to a double-double with 24 points and 9 assists. He also added 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block.

After allowing Brazil to score 58 points in the first half, the Dominican Republic showed the trademark defensive intensity of Nestor “Che” Garcia’s teams. The Dominican perimeter players did an excellent job of disrupting Brazil’s offense and lowering their field-goal percentage. Brazil had entered the game having scored more than 100 points in three consecutive games.

The Dominican Republic had lost six straight games against Brazil, dating back to their last win over the Brazilians in September 2011.

For Brazil, Leo Meindl led the way with 19 points, including 13 in the first five minutes of the game. Raúl Neto and Bruno Caboclo added 14 points apiece.

The Dominican Republic (5-2) will host Chile in their next game of Window 4, while Brazil (6-1) will travel to Mexico.
