Hours of anxiety for former M5S MP Alessandro Di Battista, who was hospitalised in a serious condition in Cuba, initially in Santa Clara, where he was working on a report. He was admitted to hospital with a severe headache and feeling unwell, but after a few hours of being unconscious, he regained consciousness and was transferred to Havana by ambulance. Having arrived yesterday evening, he responded clearly to the doctors’ questions. This morning, commenting on an Instagram post by Ilaria Loquenzi, the former Five Star Movement MP wrote: ‘I’ll do my very best to be back soon’ and also left a ‘like’.
The ambassador in hospital in Santa Clara
On Saturday, the Italian Ambassador to Cuba, Simona De Martino, visited the hospital in Santa Clara where Alessandro Di Battista had initially been admitted. The ambassador spoke with the doctors to find out about Di Battista’s condition.
The possible move to Italia
Sources at Palazzo Chigi, quoted by ANSA, say that ‘the Government is monitoring the situation very closely and a medical evacuation aircraft is on standby to bring Di Battista back to Italia’. “Before proceeding with the transfer,” the same sources point out, “it is, however, necessary to verify that the patient’s condition allows for it and that the journey does not pose any risks to his health. Any transfer will therefore be assessed by doctors on the basis of the patient’s clinical condition.”
Tajani: I am in contact with the embassy
“Since last night, I have been in contact with the Italian Embassy in Cuba to check on the condition of Alessandro Di Battista, who has been admitted to a hospital in Havana – where he was travelling – for further tests,” Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary Antonio Tajani said on social media on Saturday. “I am praying for his health,” he added. “The Foreign Ministry will provide him and his family with all the necessary assistance. My thoughts are with his loved ones and the political community he represents.”

Messages of support and encouragement have come from all political parties. “The Five Star Movement community has received the news of Alessandro Di Battista’s hospitalisation in Cuba with great concern. It is hopeful of receiving positive news and updates, and stands with his family at this time of deep concern,” reads a statement issued on Saturday by the M5S party.
