Colombia Remains Second Place at Central American Games

Colombia remained second in the medal table at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 on Aug. 3 after winning three gold medals during the day’s competition. The Colombian delegation has earned 56 gold, 66 silver, and 46 bronze medals, bringing its overall total to 168. Mexico has led with 118 gold, 81 silver, and 66 bronze for 265 medals, while Cuba is third with 29 gold, 24 silver, and 34 bronze for a total of 87.

The Colombian men’s artistic gymnastics team, Nicolas Gomez in road cycling, and Jair Cuero in Greco-Roman wrestling won the country’s three gold medals. Colombia also added silver medals in athletics and wrestling, plus bronze medals in diving and shooting.

The Games began on July 24 in the Dominican Republic and will continue through Aug. 8. Santo Domingo 2026 features 40 sports and brings together delegations from across Central America and the Caribbean. The event is the 25th edition of the regional Games and marks their centennial year.

Colombia wins three gold medals

The men’s artistic gymnastics team won gold with a score of 239.350 points. Angel Gabriel Barajas, Thomas Mejia, Yan Dairo Zabala, Keynher Camilo Vera, and Jorman Andres Alvarez formed the winning team, which finished ahead of Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Nicolas Gomez then won the men’s road cycling race after the competition reached a sprint finish. The Colombian added another cycling title to his delegation’s results in Santo Domingo.

Jair Cuero completed the day’s gold-medal haul in Greco-Roman wrestling. He defeated Venezuela’s Luis Medinas in the 77-kilogram final. Carlos Gonzalez added silver in the 67-kilogram division.

The official gymnastics program runs from Aug. 2 to Aug. 6 at the Gymnastics Pavilion in the Parque del Este Sports Complex in Santo Domingo Este. The schedule includes individual and team events for males and females.

Silver and bronze medals expand Colombia’s total

Eider Arevalo won silver in the men’s half-marathon race walk, adding another medal to Colombia’s athletics results.

Diving produced two more medals. Daniela Zapata finished second in the women’s three-meter springboard with 318.15 points, behind Mexico’s Zyanya Parra. Alejandro Solarte and Sebastian Villa won bronze in the synchronized men’s 10-meter platform after scoring 366.96 points. Mexico and Cuba finished ahead of the Colombian pair.

Sebastian Sanchez won bronze in the men’s 10-meter air pistol. He scored 212.1 points in the final, behind Mexico’s David Valdez Mouet and Venezuela’s Diego Oduber Medina. Colombian shooter Alex Peralta finished eighth with 111.4 points.

Boxing produced mixed results. Alexander Rangel lost a 3-2 split decision to Cuba’s Yusnier Sorsano in the men’s 70-kilogram division. Claudia Montoya lost 5-0 to Venezuela’s Youly Mena in the women’s 65-kilogram category.

Juan Pablo Patiño advanced in the men’s division above 90 kilograms after defeating the Dominican Republic’s Daniel Guzman by a 5-0 decision. His semifinal place guarantees Colombia another boxing medal.

Colombian squash players reach the semifinals

Colombia advanced four players to the squash semifinals. Laura Tovar reached the women’s semifinals after defeating Rachel Barnes and Mexico’s Luz Lopez. Lucia Bautista also advanced after winning against Marion Faith Gillezeau and Guatemala’s Winifer Bonilla.

In the men’s draw, Juan Vargas defeated Britain’s Daniel Henderson before beating Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez to reach the semifinals. Miguel Angel Rodriguez defeated Guyana’s Daniel Ince and Barbados’ Khamal Cumberbatch.

The individual squash competition therefore produced four Colombian semifinalists, with the next matches determining which players advance to the medal rounds.

Mexico maintains the lead in Santo Domingo

Mexico’s 251 medals gave it a clear lead in the standings on Aug. 3. Colombia had 162, followed by Cuba with 80.

Colombia’s current position follows its second-place finish at the San Salvador 2023 Games. Mexico won that edition, while Cuba finished third.

The historical medal table provides a different comparison. Centro Caribe Sports ranks Cuba first by gold medals won across the history of the Games, with 1,919. Mexico has the largest total medal haul, with 4,252 medals, including 1,523 gold, 1,439 silver and 1,290 bronze. Colombia ranks third overall with 2,046 historical medals, including 617 gold, 708 silver and 721 bronze.

The distinction comes from the way historical rankings are presented. Cuba leads the gold medal standings, while Mexico holds the highest overall medal count.

Competition continues before the Aug. 8 closing

Several events remain on the schedule before Santo Domingo 2026 concludes. Colombia’s athletes are still competing in disciplines including gymnastics, athletics, squash and fencing.
