Beyoncé Joins Colombia Earthquake Relief Efforts With $1 Million Contribution

Beyoncé is donating $1 million to relief organizations assisting communities affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia earlier this month.

Parkwood Entertainment announced the contribution on Tuesday, August 25, saying the money will support organizations working directly in areas damaged by the magnitude-7.4 earthquake. The funds will be used to provide immediate food and housing supplies to residents in some of the hardest-hit communities.

The earthquake struck near San José del Palmar in Colombia’s Chocó department on August 10. The disaster caused widespread damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure while disrupting access to food and other essential supplies.

Along with announcing Beyoncé’s donation, Parkwood encouraged others looking to assist with the recovery to support Food For The Poor and World Central Kitchen. Both organizations are providing aid to communities affected by the earthquake.

The $1 million contribution places Beyoncé among a growing number of musicians and organizations providing financial support to Colombia following the disaster.

Karol G’s Con Cora Foundation has donated $1.2 million toward earthquake relief. The contribution was announced during the Colombia: Voces por la Vida benefit concert in Bogotá on Sunday, August 23.

The benefit brought together more than 30 performers, including Maluma, Eladio Carrión and Grupo Niche. Organizers said the concert raised more than 11 billion Colombian pesos, or approximately $3.6 million, to assist families affected by the earthquake.

Shakira is also participating in recovery efforts. Shakira, Global Citizen, Live Nation and CAF have committed an initial $1.25 million toward rebuilding schools damaged in Chocó.

The rebuilding project will be led by Shakira’s Pies Descalzos Foundation, which has worked on education initiatives in Colombia for years. The funding is expected to focus specifically on restoring educational facilities damaged by the earthquake.

A wider group of musicians, athletes, nonprofits and other organizations has also joined relief efforts through the Marea Viva por el Chocó del Mañana initiative. The campaign is led by Progresa Chocó, Fundación Mi Sangre, Fundación Bancolombia and Grupo Argos.

Participants in the initiative include Juanes, James Rodríguez, Mariana Pajón, Rigoberto Urán, David Ospina, Néstor Lorenzo, Manuel Medrano, Goyo and Jhon Arias. Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Sanz, Nicky Jam and Altafulla are also among those supporting the campaign.

Beyoncé’s contribution will focus on immediate needs as recovery work continues in communities damaged by the August 10 earthquake. With homes and infrastructure affected across Chocó, relief groups are continuing efforts to provide residents with food, shelter and other essential resources while longer-term rebuilding projects move forward.
