Colombia Earthquake: CLOC South America expresses its solidarity with the Colombian people

Bogotá, 11 August 2026: The Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations – CLOC La Via Campesina South America expresses its solidarity with the Colombian people following the 7.4-magnitude earthquakes with their epicentre in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, Colombia, which occurred on 10 August.
We deeply regret the loss of life among families and communities in the country, as well as the material losses and the pain caused by this tragedy in the departments of Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Caldas and Chocó.
Words are limited for the difficult moment our sister country is going through. We remain open and ready to listen to those who may require our support at this time, and we make the physical and digital networks of CLOC South America available to respond to this emergency.
This event and its aftershocks are taking place in the context of a national disaster declared in Colombia since July of this year due to forest fires, with active fires in multiple municipalities.
Responding to these simultaneous disasters calls on us to reflect, to widely disseminate information, and to strengthen our territories in preparation for and response to the effects of the climate crisis and other types of disasters that have occurred in Latin America.
From CLOC La Via Campesina South America, we call on social organisations, popular movements, trade unions, youth and all peoples to strengthen international solidarity and remain vigilant in the face of the consequences of this catastrophe.
Likewise, we demand that the responsible entities and institutions guarantee a timely, dignified and comprehensive response that protects the social and human rights of the communities affected by the earthquake and ensures the necessary conditions for their care, recovery and reconstruction.
