Colombia: Colombian stadium becomes an aid centre after tragic earthquake – StadiumDB.com

More than 300 people have died and 180,000 have been affected by the terrible earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. It will take months or even years of extensive work to restore the infrastructure in the affected areas to its normal state. The Colombian football community has come together at El Campín stadium to contribute to the relief effort.

El Campín becomes a hub of solidarity for those affected

933 tonnes of food, 10,000 people and more than 2,000 vehicles per day carrying donations arrived at Bogotá’s Nemesio Camacho El Campín stadium. The venue, home to Millonarios F.C. and Independiente Santa Fe, became the capital’s humanitarian aid collection center for six days. Of everything collected, 344 tonnes were sent to Risaralda, 236 to Valle del Cauca, 157 to Caldas, 138 to Chocó and 58 tonnes to Quindío.

However, although the collection center closed after around a week, El Campín’s contribution does not end there, as a charity match will be played there this Friday, August 21, under the slogan Let’s Raise Colombia. The match will feature Colombian football legends such as Radamel Falcao, Fredy Guarín and Mario Alberto Yepes. Ticket prices start at 25,000 Colombian pesos, around €7, and all proceeds will be donated to organisations such as the Colombian Red Cross, Fundación Solidaridad por Colombia and TECHO para mi País.

Will América play at El Campín?

The earthquake has also forced several teams from the affected areas to look for a new home. América de Cali has reportedly turned its attention to El Campín and, according to sporting director Iván Alejo, has received the support of Millonarios and Santa Fe: We have received solidarity from Millonarios and Santa Fe. They gave us the green light to be able to play at El Campín.

America’s stadium, the Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, did not suffer serious structural damage, although some damage has been detected to elements such as the lighting system, water and sanitation networks, masonry, glass and some areas of the stands.
