In the wake of a gruelling, rollercoaster continental campaign, Uganda Silverbacks head coach Mandy Juruni did not mince words about his team’s exit from the FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers.
Uganda picked up six defeats from as many games played against Angola, Mali and Egypt. Despite the poor run that stretches Uganda’s winless run to 11 games, Mandy can salute the unit for the fight they staged.
Yet, amid the sting of elimination, Juruni’s prevailing sentiment was one of profound pride, resilience, and an unyielding belief in the future of Ugandan basketball.
Reflecting on a tournament defined by its intense physicality and high stakes, Juruni lauded his players for their unwavering commitment to the national colours.
“I am proud of the boys,” Juruni stated, capturing the emotional weight of their campaign. “We really had tough games even though we are out of the competition, but the guys didn’t really give up. They came to give everything for the jersey as well as represent the country.”
A Legacy of showing up
Uganda’s basketball trajectory has been a story of grit, and Juruni was quick to remind critics and fans alike of the Silverbacks’ remarkable consistency on the grand stage.
Navigating the “up and down” nature of their journey as a unit, the Silverbacks have cemented themselves as a mainstay in African basketball, securing qualification in the past four consecutive AfroBasket tournaments, a feat that speaks volumes about the program’s growth.
“It’s been up and down but at least we are always here,” Juruni emphasised. “We have always shown up and represented the nation in the past four AfroBaskets.”
Call for consistency and correction
While celebrating the team’s fighting spirit, the experienced tactician is not blind to the gaps that separate Uganda from the podium.
For Juruni, the conclusion of this tournament marks the immediate beginning of a rigorous soul-searching phase, which ought to prompt immediate action.
The silver lining for Ugandan basketball remains its fearlessness. The Silverbacks have proven they can go toe-to-toe with the continent’s traditional powerhouses, a reality Juruni believes is entirely within their grasp if the right infrastructure and mindset are sustained.
“I believe that we can play against everyone on the continent only if we believe and put in the fight,” Juruni concluded.
As the Silverbacks return home, they do so without a win but with their heads held high. If Coach Juruni’s blueprint of accountability and fierce patriotism is anything to go by, Uganda’s basketball journey is far from over, it is simply gearing up for the next fight.
